Primarily what you expect to get out of the campaign and what you are prepared to put into it.

Begin by defining what you need to generate from the telemarketing campaign to have a positive ROI. Beginning with a clearly defined goal in mind will enable you to review the strategy when it begins. This target can be figured in several different ways. The target could be defined in revenue over a period of time, or relating to number of appointments set or prospects generated. It could even be in contacts made if your overall reason for the telemarketing was to verify data files. The target needs to be trackable and it should be practical, do not expect a telemarketer to generate more leads than one of your employees could working the identical hours on the first week of calling. Your preliminary goal if you are new to telemarketing should be to break even. Upcoming campaigns can improve upon these initial results and increase your ROI .

After determining what you would like to get out of a campaign it is time to decide what has to be done to make that goal attainable. There are three major areas to consider when setting up a telemarketing strategy on your own.

1.Where are you going to find the remote employee to make the calls. There are two main options, hiring an independent person or hiring a call center. Working with an independent caller can be effective but there is more risk, such as not receiving service, quality, or even getting ripped off. There are several services that you can use to find telemarketing employees, such as guru dot com and elance dot com. Hiring a call center can be slightly more expensive but it mitigates much of the risk and usually the quality is much better.

2.Developing a calling script and process. What you want the telemarketer to say on each call and how they will deliver successful appointments or leads back to you needs to be considered. Craft a simple straightforward script that lays out what you are offering and why the prospect should care and then gets their permission for follow up. The script doesn't need to sell your service completely. It should qualify and generate interest, remember to keep it short and simple. Also consider what objections prospects might have and give the telemarketer rebuttals to use. Google Docs is a great tool for keeping track of what the telemarketer is doing and for them to send leads back to you.

3.Having good data to call is the most important part of a successful telemarketing campaign. The list of prospects your telemarketer is calling is as important as the factors listed above, if not more so. Get fresh calling data from a reputable list broker. Its can also be worth while to look into buying aged web leads for your industry, these are people who expressed interest in your product or service in the past and may still be interested. Search on Google for "bulk web leads" to find companies that sell these.

Now that your telemarketing campaign is set up and running you will need to pay attention to how things are going. If possible review call recordings and give the caller feedback about situations you hear on the calls. You can always improve upon the script, rebuttals and process. If you find something that isn't working change it. If you hear opportunities to improve sections do it and make sure the caller understands the changes.

Telemarketing is one of the best lead generation channels for many small business sectors. It can take some time to refine your process and work out small issues at first, but once you have a working process it can serve you well for years and in many cases it can be scaled up to increase the benefits futher.
